Oceanography Fav

My favorite subject in oceanography was studying offshore drilling i liked this topic because we had a chance to see how it was affecting our community and our planet. My favorite subject in geology was learing about how fossils and other remains can show what time of history something happened in. My favorite part of astronomy was learnig about characteristics of the sun since it was such a unique topic. My favorite topic about metorology was learning about the many, many, many diffrent types of clouds and knowing what type of precipitation they will bring.

Offshore Drilling

Offshre drilling is the drilling off of continental shelfs in the ocean to find oil.

Offshore driling is bad because it cans damage marine life.

Offshore drilling is good because it can produce more oil for the U.S and thus cause the U.S to be less dependent on other countries.

I feel that offshore drilling is not a good option because it would damage marine life and for countries that depend on seafood for their foodsource.

H-R Diagram

1.The main sequence of an H-R diagrams is the arrangement of stars in the diagram.

2.90 precent of stars are mian sequence stars.

3.Yes the Sun is a main sequence star.

4. The next thing that will happen to the sun is that is will become a redgiant.

5. The picture to the left shows an H-R diagram. As you can see the sun is aprt of the main sequence. This Graph shows you the relationship between absolute magnitude and temperature of a star.

Astronomy Topics

The Black Hole

The black hole is the densit place in the universe. The gravitational force of a black hole is so strong that nothing can escape from it.Black holes form when a stars nuclear fuel runs out and is crushed by its own gravitaional force. The event horizion is the surface of the black hole. The point of singularity is in the inside of the black hole and is made up of all the holes mass. The way these to relate is because once you hit the event horizion you immediatly goto the point of singularity.

Star Consellations

Star consellations have been used since 4000 B.C., they have been documented by the Mesopatimians. The constelations were used to tell stories and to try to predict peoples futures. A few examples of consellations are Ursa Minor, Ursa Major, and Polaris. Polaris is a well known constalation. It is known as the north star because it is almost above the northern pole. You can tell which star it is because it is almost the brightest star in the area.

Worm Holes

Worm holes are structures that connect two regions that are distanced or unrealated. Worm holes have been disscued to be a source of time travel. Scientist aren't sure if it is possible because it has never been experimented, but they do think it is required. There are many diffrent hypothesis on these wormholes.

Pluto

Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet. It is much smaller than all the other planets and orbits beyond Neptune. Pluto was descuverd in 1930. After pluto was desuvered they decided it couln't be a planet because its composition is ice and rock. In fact Pluto is known to be just a part of the Kuiper belt.
The Moon
The moon is Earths only sattelite. Most of what we know about the moon comes from the apollo missions. The moon has many features such as craters which are depressions in the moons surface. Highlands are a side of the moon which is covered in mountains. Maria is a ancient bed of basaltic.

1. What 3 factors effect wind?
  • pressure gradient
  • Coriolis Effect
  • Friction

2. Which of the 3 do you think has the greatest effect? Why?
I think friction is the most imortant factor because it slows down air movement and it can change the wind direction.

3. What would happen if this factor (from #2) all of a sudden stopped? Remember to include details about what might happen in your response.
If friction stopped the air would never slow down and you would always be able to tell which direction the wind would go in.

2.The cloud that looks best to me is the nimbostratus cloud because its big and puffy looking.

3. The nimbostratus brings alot of rain.

2. My favorite air mass is maritine tropical because it brings rain and it brings warm weather. I love rain it makes everything peaceful.

3.Swimming
Picnicing
Walking in the Rain
Splashing in Puddles

The greenhoues effect is the heating of Earth due to the presence of green house gases. The greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrious oxide, and many more. Green house gases are all produced in many ways. An example is carbon dioxide is produced in many ways, when animals breath, when dead plants and animals decay, and during natural forest fires. Man kind also produces carbon dioxide when coal, oil, and gas are burnt for energy and electricity.

The greenhouse effect impacts our lives beacuse they keep the Earth 33 degrees Celsius warmer than it would be without these gases in the atmosphere. I think the greenhouse effect is bad because it is one of the many factors of global warming.

Hurricane Ike

1.I read the article titled Hurricane Ike Delays cargo for space outpost. The second artice I read about was titles Hurricane Ike Pushes sea onto Texas islands.

2.The first article was about Russian and U.S space aginces postponing the date of when their space cargo shipment will dock. The reason they had to potpone the date is because Hurricane Ike was gaining strength and Texas was evacuted. Houstan, Tecas is where the space station is located.

3. The second article was about Hurricane Ike. Hurricane Ike is already posing a big threat onto Texas. 200,000 residents of Texas have evacuted from low lying areas of metro Houstan. Police offficers will be on stand by until friday night and then the people will be on their own. The military has 43 helicopters by just in case they need to do any search and rescue missions.

4.The article that was most disaterous was the second one. Hurricane Ike Pushes sea onto Texas. This is beacuse the article is saying how the Hurricane is affecting Texas. Many people had to evacuate to stay safe from the storm.

5. Both articles talk about the effect of Hurricane Ike and people evacuating. The first article only talks about how the hurricane will affect the space center and how they had to evacuate. The second artice talks about how many people of Houstan, Texas had to evacuate.

RECENT EARTHQUAKE

1. Earthquakes tend to happen around the pacific ocean, on the borders of asia and america.

2. I think this is because there are alot of faults in those areas for example California hs faults and thats where earthquakes are happening.

3.Earthquakes occur on or near the edges of tectonic plates where stress is most concentrated.

4. The closet earthquake to occur was in Southeastern Missouri.

5. A very strong earthquake had struck off of Canadas Pacific coast near Vancover Island. This earthquake happened at 5:37am local time.(1237 GMT) Natural Resources Canada said it was the largest of "a series of earthquakes occurring in the seismically active region".

The six crystal forms are cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, and triclinic. A purple flourite specimen is an cubic formed mineral. Zircon is an form of tetragonal mineral. A beryl is an example of an hexagonal mineral. An adimite is an example of an monoclinic mineral. A azurite is an example of an monoclinic mineral. A boleite is an example of a triclinic mineral. MIinerals come in all diffrent shapes, colors, and sizes.

The best renewable energy source is solar energy. Solar energy takes the light from the sun and turns it into energy. The equipment is very expensive but it pays off in the end. In some place you can do net marketing and pay very little if you use electric through your energy company. Net marketing is calculated by how much energy that you used of the energy company and how much you gave to the energy company. For example if your mom is at work and you and your sister at school and no ones home your energy will be put into the power lines of your neighborhood.

Like all resources available solar power has its downfalls. Besides it being very expensive at first, you cannot use it when the sun is not out or cloudy days when the sun doesn't shine alot. In places where they don't get alot of sunshine this may not be a good resource for them.

I think that in a few years there will be a way to store the electricity in some sort of battery that charges during the day and powers on at night.

My favorite map projection depends on what i need the map for. If I had to just choose a map I would pick the gnomic map. By placeing a piece of paper on a globe so that it touches a single point on the globes surface. This map can show the distance between places, even though the distances are a little off it can help people such as sailors, navigators, and travelers. It can easily show how far the one point is from another.

Keresa's Earth Science Fave

Earth science is the study of geology. My favorite subdivision of the subject is astronomy. Astronomy intrest me because it could better help me understand my planet as well as others. Knowing the physical laws of my enviroment could help me take care of it, knowing what it needs, how to take care of it, how it revolves around the sun and how to tell time by observing the sun.
Astronomy can also help me learn about earths surrounding neighbors and their make up. It can help me compare the planets and see whats diffrent. Knowing about this kind of information can help me try to discover things such as establishing life on another planet. This is a very intresting subject.
